I am sorry I have been so scarce with posting and blogging the second half of this year. Yes, it's true, the music business has come roaring back, at least for small-medium sized clubs. I am fortunate to be working a l l the time. Primarily booking/tour managing/drumming/recording for Aaron Sparling and the Hippies & Cowboys band. But artists I have worked with over the years (David Ball, Adam Fears, Dairy Daughters) are all getting back to work, so there have been lots of opportunities....

In other words, everything I have been telling y'all in my Music City 101 seminars, Music City Mondays video blogs...all that stuff ACTUALLY WORKS! I've been practicing what I preach, and I am grateful to say it is working.

After a recent show, I filmed this to give you a little more detail. (Yes, that's an actual backstage golf cart pic! You can't make this stuff up!)

Anyway, stay tuned for more content over the winter, once things slow down a bit. I'm learning more all the time, and I look forward to sharing with y'all!

Music City Mondays #34 w/ Kevin Corbo, Full Episode Notes
Music City Mondays is an ongoing video series of observations, stories, interviews, and industry tips from me, Music City 101 founder Scott Metko. In episode #33 I kicked off the series, with observations from Ralph Waldo Emerson’s 1848 essay The Law Of Compensation, and how that relates to the sacrifices all of us make to follow our dreams. Working in the music business since I was 10, my observations relate to the goals I’ve set in that industry, sacrifices I’ve made, the dreams I’ve seen come true, and those I am still chasing.

In this week’s episode, I talk to my rhythm brother, bassist Kevin Corbo. He & I lay down the foundation for Aaron Sparling and the Hippies & Cowboys band, playing an average of 5 one-nighters every week.

I don’t usually blog after an interview, but Kevin dropped so many nuggets of GOLD from his (comparatively short) time in the music business, I had to write this and document it all, so y’all get it! Here’s the price that Kevin has paid to follow his dreams:

Initially, Kevin tried to “strong-arm” his way into a successful career in music, trying to name his price of what he felt he was worth. What he found was the MOST successful approach was much simpler: get together with friends, have fun, make music, just doing what he loves to do, and what he came to this town to do. And if you follow Aaron Sparling’s tour calendar, you will see just that: we are working ALL the time.

As far as sacrifices, Kevin realized he has given up a more predictable, mapped-out approach to success: choose a profession, go to school, learn the skills, and apply for work in that field. The entertainment business is not like that. Getting a degree from Berklee, Belmont, or North Texas for example, does NOT guarantee any type of work in the industry. There are no guidance counselors in your senior year, ready to set you up with an audition to be Little Big Town’s guitarist.

Kevin advises 1) taking the time to become skilled at your craft, first and foremost, and 2) develop your personality and attitude to the point where you are easy to work with.

“Being a good hang” is often one of the most important deciding factors, between two people with similar skill levels. Yes, it is possible to continually and consistently work on yourself, as well as your talent. Develop those two areas to the point where people will begin to notice you, and you can command some level of attention in your area.

When the opportunities come, it’s best to choose a team around you (in this case, a band), of people you can trust. People that will allow you to be yourself, but also allow you to check your ego. Be humble, and be a contributing part of that team, rather than trying to stand out, and be the star of that team.

But there is a balance between checking your ego, and taking abuse. Kevin advises you avoid those situations where you are not allowed to speak up, and give opinions or input. In other words, respect yourself to the point where you hold out for situations where you will be respected for what you bring to the band, record label, songwriting team, music tech startup, whatever your dream may be.

There is always a risk of “backing the wrong pony,” but at the same time, it is important to make the artist you work for, as successful as possible. That in turn, leads to your own success.

Kevin sums it up: get the skills you need, be persistent, make the right connections & you will be unstoppable.

I wrap it up with my own observations, but you’ll have to watch the video to see that.
Music City 101tag:musiccity101.net,2005:Post/65542372021-02-20T13:55:07-06:002021-06-29T11:16:48-05:00How To Keep Working With EVERYONE!
Understatement of the year: The entertainment business has never been easy, but 2020 might just have been the worst year since...World War II??

Still, people NEED entertainment, whether it's a diversion from daily stress, for enjoyment, inspiration, education, or simply a shot of positivity to get them through to the next part of their day. And we, as musicians, songwriters, film-makers, artists, and music/film/TV industry workers, need to bring that to them.

However, we live in a world growing ever more divisive over the last 15+ years. So HOW do we keep working together, even if we're not always in complete agreement or alignment?

In this Tuesday's Music City 101 class, "How To Keep Working With EVERYONE," you will learn:

Insights and skills from

Country superstar Eric Church

ABC News anchor Dan Harris

Nashville multi-instrumentalist Tyson Leslie

Music City 101 founder, drummer, artist manager, musician actor Scott Metko

The art of the "hang"

How to beware of and deal with the "court of public opinion"

Social media best practices

How to generate empathy and compassion for people with whom we disagree

The lessons of those who have lost businesses, altered careers, and have been separated from family members, by not getting this right

Learn this and more, along with answers to your questions, in our next Music City 101 class: March 3rd at 7 PM CST.

Imagine this:

You are one of the top players in your country, playing on TV, playing the best gigs. Then you move halfway across the world and start over.

You replace Phil Collins in Genesis, cut 8 songs on their 1997 album, Calling All Stations, and subsequently join the band for their 1998 tour. Can you imagine the pressure of that gig?

Then John Mayer's breakthrough album, Room for Squares. Then Jason Mraz, Joss Stone, Chris Cornell and Billy Squier. Imagine the competition for those gigs.

Relocated to Nashville in 2010. Blake Shelton could have any drummer in this town on his records. It's Nir Z.

How do you maintain that consistency and level of excellence, as you are starting over as an "outsider" in two major entertainment markets, including Music City?

In our Music City 101 class Feb. 15th at 8 PM, we'll learn the mindset, habits and work ethic that fueled that success.

Celebrating my birthday in a Minneapolis suburban Italian restaurant in 2002, I listed my goals on a napkin. High on the list was:

Move To Nashville

Audition For Traveling Bands (that was my exact wording, when I didn't know how else to describe it)

Fast forward to summer 2018, when I was able to snap the above picture, performing with Julia Cole, moments before we opened for Jon Pardi. Between 2004 (when I moved to Music City), and the time that picture was taken, I have performed with recording artists David Ball, Mila Mason, Danielle Peck, Brad Paisley, Rayna Jaymes and Patsy Cline. YES, Rayna Jaymes was a fictitious character on ABC's Nashville. And YES, it was the Lifetime movie version of Patsy Cline, but WHATEVER!

My point is:

I wrote my goals down.

I achieved many of them, and have many more to go!

Music City 101 Goal-setting for 2021

In this class, we will learn first-hand:

1) what 2020 has been like in the Nashville recording studios.

2) what it was it like when the Grand Old Opry performed to an empty house, for the first time since World War ll. And we'll learn how that has gradually changed.

3) how Mark pivoted, adjusted, and developed new income streams during this lockdown that he will be able to use long after we get past this season.

Along the way, I bet we'll hear how he landed the Opry gig AND the influence of growing up the son of a very talented father, Barry Beckett.

Yes, it's a great idea, and one of a number of revenue streams we can get out on the road. I was set to go on the Country Music Cruise the following January and had every intention of having all kinds of free time that week, to sit and write a good blog on the topic. I got it half written before TM life took over. Since then, I was so busy doing it, I never had time to sit and write about it. That is, until corona....

I've spent my pandemic building Music City 101 and writing music business classes to help creatives. These concepts and mindsets not only apply to this town, but to any entertainment center. This Monday's class (July 20th 8:00 European Time MET) gets right to this question: "Side Man To Artist Manager In 4 Years." Along the way, I became bandleader, then tour manager, before artist manager. I still hold those titles with my main artist gig, David Ball, and various combinations of those duties with other artists.

I'll talk about the strategy and mindset I used to get there. We'll discuss all the highlights I have enjoyed with various Nashville rising stars and legends, culminating in Warner Music Nashville & Omnivore Recordings cooperating in the reissue of David's career-defining <a contents=""Thinkin' Problem" 25th Anniversary" data-link-label="" data-link-type="url" href="http://omnivorerecordings.com/shop/thinkin-problem/">"Thinkin' Problem" 25th Anniversary deluxe package and subsequent 2019 tour.

These strategies and mindsets can help you succeed on any gig or job you have in the entertainment industry.

Music City 101 is a coaching platform that provides inside knowledge on how to succeed in Nashville TN, pulling the curtain back and busting myths on how the business of music works in Music City, arguably the global center for live and recorded music. Designed for all creatives (artists, writers, musicians, music industry students) Music City 101 will coach you faster and closer to success. The concepts & mindsets used and taught by Metko, can apply to any entertainment center or creative city, even if you aren't planning a move to Music City.

Metko, who is artist manager and drummer for David Ball, Mila Mason, & Adam Fears was Rayna Jaymes drummer in ABC’s "Nashville", Patsy Cline’s drummer in Lifetime’s "Patsy & Loretta", and ran the indie label LandStar Entertainment on Music Row.
This Music City 101 class, the first for European time zones, will discuss a networking concept that I’ve used often & successfully, called "Go Where Others Aren't."

If I Go Where Others Aren’t, I will find opportunities that others are not finding. I will get into that in more detail, with examples and stories, during our Zoom webinar session on Monday night, July 13th 8:00 PM European Time (8:00 PM MET or 1:00 PM Nashville TN time)

Here are some sneak peeks:

You’ll learn how I was able to book Grammy-winning country legend David Ball back onto the famous Grand Ole Opry Stage, Nashville TN, after a 10-yr hiatus.

You’ll find out how I was hired for a recording session, because I decided to attend a crawfish boil happy hour event.

I will share a story of a friend from the Biotech industry who helped me book a show with one of my artists. Held in a downtown Nashville honky-tonk, we sold 300 CD’s at that one show. THREE HUNDRED! That will be a fun story to tell.

Or someone moves to Nashville and their friend back home tells them they need to look me up. We go to lunch or have a drink. I give them some tips about how this town works and what their next move should be. I try to do what Tommy & Paul did for me. And because I love Nashville and what I do here, the passion and positivity comes through. Sixty to ninety minutes later, they are fired up, ready to take on the world, and thank me wholeheartedly! I would always think, “I should really figure out a way to bottle this somehow to help more folks.” So that's what I'm doing.

Would you like to hear from a few of them? Watch the TESTIMONIALS.

A publisher friend of mine teaches a music industry class at a local college. He invited me in to speak. Two hours later, I got an intern and a recommendation letter out of it!

That’s why I'm launching Music City 101. To see if this is right for you, see PROGRAMS.

Music City 101 is designed for:

Anyone planning to relocate to Nashville, or even thinking of a move to Nashville.

Those new to town, trying to figure what is going on here! (musicians, artists, writers, music business hopefuls).

Recent graduates, fresh out of music business, performance & songwriting programs. In a sense, they are “new to town,” as they first hit the real world.

Anyone who feels stuck where they are, even if they’ve lived here for years.

Or if you just need a shot of positive therapy by hanging with a group of like-minded creatives, this is for you!

My goals:

To inform, inspire and connect.

Warn you about those who would try to take advantage of the inexperienced. Believe me, if you are green in this town, you will be easy to spot!

Do whatever I can to move you down the road to your next stop. I can’t make you famous, but I can get you closer…

Meet online once a week, depending up tour schedules, and other things that may come up in this “Crazy Town.”

Share stories and experiences.

Keep it to an hour of your time with each session. If you’ve ever taken a weekly music lesson, think of this as a music career lesson.

Leave me a comment or a message. Tell me what you'd like to cover, what you'd like to learn & what you have questions about. If I can't find the answer, I will get you closer to the answer.

Let's have some fun.
